The definition of a tree nut:

A tree nut is a hard shelled fruit of some plants having a indehiscent seed (not splitting open at maturity ). These nuts grow 

on trees as opposed  peanuts/legumes, which grow IN the ground! 

“Some” examples of tree nuts are: almonds, brazil nut, cashew, coconut (there are differing views of this, check with your allergist), hazelnut, macadamia nut, pecan, pine nut, pistachio, shea nut( found in may cosmetics), walnut.  Please visit www.kidswithfoodallergies.org for a more extensive list.

Trees nut can be lurking in anything, cakes, cookies, vegetable dishes, ice cream, salads, even breading for meats…. always ask before you eat :)
